What are the benefits of Power BI?
There are so many benefits to using Power BI, here are a few worth highlighting
- Updating reports manually every month is time consuming and tedious work. Free your staff to deal with the issues highlighted in the data not the data itself.
- Power BI connects directly to systems. Data is refreshed on a schedule so there is no copying and pasting this month over last month or adding this month to the previous months.
- Everyone accesses the same report online so users can’t accidentally type over data.
- The source of truth is the system(s) you are maintaining, Power BI connects to that and people consume the report on the web. Depending on permissions people may be able to forward a link to the report but it will be the same report everyone else is seeing
- Power BI has a rich set of visualisations from essential charts like bar, line and pie to maps, kpis and key influencers. There’s also integration with python and r which are commonly used by data scientists and there is a huge library of custom charts provided by the power bi community. In addition visualisations easily interact with each other on the page. For example, you can select an area on a map and see details of projects or people in that area in a chart or table.
- Power BI is easily consumed on mobile and tablet. Reports often work well out of the box or you can have them designed specifically to be consumed in that way because you know that’s how your users are going to interact with the data
- Power BI’s Row Level Security (RLS) filters a report so users only see data relevant to them this means you don’t have to create and maintain different reports for different audiences.

What are the different types of data sources that Power BI can connect to?
Power BI can connect to a wide variety of data sources. Common sources are SQL databases, SharePoint and cloud based software. If you have an ERP, CRM, Finance, Project or HR system there’s a good chance Power BI will be able to connect to it.
